I totally agree that having a blog is so important.
As you mention you can use a blog to brand yourself by choosing your name and your domain name and then provide valuable content to brand yourself as a helpful marketer.
I also like that blogs are interactive. As a marketer you can use a blog find out what your readers what and need.
